Auto Ruf started in 1939 as a straightforward repair business in Pfaffenhausen, a small Bavarian town with no obvious connection to sports cars. Alois Ruf Sr. ran it as a garage, added a full-service filling station around 1949, then started a tour bus company built on Mercedes-Benz chassis. The pivot toward Porsche came from an accident, not a plan. In November 1963, Ruf Sr. was driving one of his tour buses when he watched a Porsche 356 Karmann Hardtop lose control and crash into a ditch. He drove the injured driver to the hospital, then bought the wrecked car from the insurer and restored it in his own shop.
Late in 1964, while Ruf Sr. drove the restored 356 through Munich with his teenage son Alois Ruf Jr., a stranger flagged the car down at a traffic light and offered to buy it on the spot. The deal closed in the buyer's apartment, paid in cash counted out of a candy box. The man then lent the Rufs his own older 356 Reutter to get home. Driving back in that borrowed car, father and son recognized something durable: a fanatical, well-funded Porsche owner base that would pay for service, restoration, and mechanical work no factory dealer offered.
That same year, on the A8 autobahn between Munich and Stuttgart, an unfamiliar prototype blew past the Rufs' Opel Rekord at speed. The motoring press was calling it the Porsche 2000, Porsche's still-secret successor to the 356, soon renamed the 911. Five years later, on his nineteenth birthday, Alois Ruf Jr. received a crash-damaged, engine-less 911 from his father, rebuilt with a lower-output flat-four borrowed from a Porsche 912 because the teenager was still an inexperienced driver. Decades afterward, a full restoration of that same car turned up its chassis number: it was the sixth prototype Porsche built during 911 development, a car that had previously passed through the hands of engine designer Hans Mezger and Ferdinand Piëch. It was likely the exact prototype the Rufs had watched fly past on the autobahn.

Why a tuning shop needed to become a manufacturer
By 1977, RUF was building its own gearboxes. The Turbo 3.3 paired a stroked 3.3 liter flat six with a proprietary five speed manual, a real jump over the standard 930 Turbo's four speed. A year later came the RUF SCR, tuned from Porsche's own 911 SC at a moment when the factory had detuned that car to 180 hp and was seriously weighing whether to keep building the rear engined 911 at all, favoring the front engined, water cooled 928 instead. RUF's SCR made 212 hp from the same naturally aspirated platform, and the German press response helped tip Porsche's internal argument toward keeping the 911 in production.
RUF's modified cars were still legally registered as Porsches. If a heavily reworked engine or chassis failed catastrophically, any resulting lawsuit would name Porsche AG, a company that had not built the part in question. That was a genuine liability problem, and Porsche's leadership had no interest in carrying warranty and liability exposure for a third party's work. Alois Ruf Jr. pursued formal manufacturer status to sever that exposure, and in 1981 the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, Germany's federal motor authority, granted it, assigning RUF the manufacturer key number 6942.

The practical result shows up on every RUF built from that point forward. A factory Porsche carries a vehicle identification number starting WP0. One built by RUF from a bare shell or its own chassis carries a number starting W09 instead, titled, registered, and insured as a RUF, with no mention of Porsche on the paperwork. Send a Porsche to Pfaffenhausen for an upgrade, though, and it keeps its WP0 number, staying a Porsche with a RUF conversion even when the mechanical work is identical.
That single digit, a 9 instead of a 0, is the line German law and international VIN standards draw between a manufacturer and a modifier.
From Porsche's parts bin to a chassis Porsche never touches
For most of the 1980s and 1990s, RUF built cars from bodies in white: bare, unpainted steel shells bought directly through Porsche's dealer parts channel, with no engine, suspension, wiring, or factory VIN attached. Buying the shell this way let RUF weld in its own Integrated Roll Cage and build up the car entirely with its own components without ever touching Porsche's assembly line. Neither company treats the arrangement as a partnership: it runs as a parts order, the same catalog relationship any dealer customer has with Porsche, just at a scale no ordinary buyer reaches. By the late 1990s, Porsche's move to robotic, continuous assembly made pulling bare shells out of that process impractical, and RUF adapted by buying complete new Porsches and stripping them to bare metal for a ground up rebuild instead.
That workaround lasted until 2017, when RUF stopped building around Porsche metal altogether. The current CTR Anniversary and SCR sit on a proprietary carbon fiber monocoque developed with the German engineering firm Vela Performance, sharing nothing structural with a production 911 beyond window glass and wiper motors. RUF designs its own inboard double wishbone suspension, casts its own engine blocks, and certifies its own emissions and crash performance, work a licensed tuner never has to do because it can lean on the factory's homologation instead.

The clearest public proof of what that independence bought RUF arrived in April 1987 at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test track, where a Road & Track competition to find the world's fastest production car clocked a twin turbo RUF CTR at 339.8 km/h, 211 mph, ahead of every car in the field including Porsche's own 959, which topped out at 317 km/h. Editors nicknamed the yellow car the Yellowbird on the spot, and the name stuck. It was a car built on a Porsche shell that no Porsche of its era could beat, and Porsche had never officially built it.
The Yellowbird proved the point Porsche's own accountants had missed: a company with no factory line, working from Porsche's cast-off metal, could out-drive Porsche's own flagship. RUF never needed permission for that, only a VIN of its own.
