Land Rover began at Easter 1947, when Maurice Wilks, technical director of the Rover Company, reputedly sketched a civilian four-wheel-drive utility vehicle in the sand at Red Wharf Bay on the Isle of Anglesey. Rover's prewar luxury saloons had become unworkable under Britain's postwar steel rationing, and Wilks saw an opening between the war-surplus Willys Jeep on his farm and a proper tractor. The first prototype was scrapped within months. A refined version debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show on April 30, 1948, and the name outlived the shortage that created it.
The version of this story that gets repeated most often turns it into something soft: two brothers walking a beach where a stick in the sand became a flash of inspiration. That framing undersells what was actually happening. Maurice Wilks was solving an immediate problem, not building something for the history books. He was running triage on a car company that had just lost its core product to an act of government policy, and the vehicle he sketched was meant to last a few seasons, not decades.
Rover had spent three decades building a reputation on solid, conservative saloons for a comfortable domestic buyer. Britain in 1947 did not have room for that customer anymore.

The steel ration that forced Rover's hand
Spencer Wilks joined Rover as general manager in 1929, brought in by managing director Frank Searle from a joint managing directorship at Hillman. He pulled his younger brother Maurice, an automotive and aeronautical engineer, into the chief engineer's chair the following year, and by 1934 Spencer had become managing director. The brothers spent the 1930s building Rover's name on upscale, conservative saloons. Then came the war years: aircraft engines instead of cars, developing Frank Whittle's early jet turbines before trading that program to Rolls-Royce in 1943 in exchange for its Meteor tank-engine factory at Nottingham.
When the war ended, Rover's Coventry car plant on Helen Street had been flattened by the Blitz, so the company shifted production to Solihull, into a shadow factory built to assemble Bristol Hercules aircraft engines. That move landed Rover in the middle of an unforgiving postwar industrial policy.
The Ministry of Supply rationed steel by export performance, under the blunt national mandate of "Export or Die," and the allocation Rover received was enough to build about 1,100 luxury cars a year. That was not enough to keep the Solihull workforce employed, let alone earn the foreign currency the government wanted. Rival manufacturer Standard answered the same squeeze by switching to agricultural tractors (Silodrome). Spencer and Maurice Wilks needed a third option: a vehicle that used almost no rationed steel, could be tooled cheaply, and could be built fast enough to matter.
A Jeep, a beach, and a dead end called Centre Steer
Maurice Wilks owned a farm at Tros yr Afon, near Newborough on Anglesey, and ran it partly with a war-surplus Willys MB Jeep. The Jeep was tough but had no power takeoff for farm implements, and replacement parts were getting harder to find in Wales in 1947. Over the Easter holiday that year, walking the beach at Red Wharf Bay with his brother, Maurice is said to have sketched a civilian version, something between the Jeep and a proper tractor (Britain By Car). It is a well-told story and probably a true one, though like most origin anecdotes it has had decades to get smoother in the retelling.
What is not in dispute is what got built next. Rover's engineers put together a prototype that autumn on a modified Willys Jeep chassis, axles, and transmission, borrowing its engine and gearbox from a Rover saloon. It was finished in the autumn of 1947 and nicknamed the Centre Steer, for the one design decision that made it strange: the steering wheel sat in the middle of the cab, linked by chains and sprockets to a Jeep steering box mounted off to one side (Maurice Wilks). The logic was sound on paper: a single centre-steer design could sell in Britain and in every export market that drove on the other side of the road, with no separate left-hand and right-hand production lines to tool up. Maurice tested it in the dunes at Traeth Llanddwyn near his own farm and it worked, mechanically. It also left no room for a passenger next to the driver and made the hand signals British road law required all but impossible to give. The Centre Steer was dismantled in early 1948, and Rover's engineers went back to a conventional layout.
Birmabright, and a shape drawn by what wasn't on the shelf
Rover approved 50 pre-production vehicles for engineering trials by late 1947, run under engineer Arthur Goddard. Forty-eight of them were finished, the first rolling out on March 11, 1948, carrying a proper box-section ladder chassis in galvanized steel, a 1,595cc engine making roughly 50 horsepower, and a purpose-built two-speed transfer case to replace the borrowed Jeep unit. Three of them went to Amsterdam for the vehicle's public debut at the motor show on April 30, 1948 (Land Rover Media).

The body told the same shortage story as the chassis. With sheet steel unavailable for the bodywork, Wilks specified Birmabright, an aluminum-magnesium alloy the Birmid Group had introduced back in 1929 for its resistance to saltwater corrosion, previously used mostly on boat hulls and record-attempt cars (Birmabright). Birmabright would not stamp into the deep, compound curves that steel could take, so the panels were drawn flat, joined at constant-radius single-curve bends that basic press brakes could handle without expensive tooling. That constraint produced the boxy, flat-flanked profile that became the vehicle's visual signature. The shape was dictated by what the metal could do, rather than any styling brief (Hazell thesis). Even the paint was a shortage artifact: the only stock on hand was surplus aircraft cockpit paint, so the first vehicles left Solihull in a narrow range of light green. That held until a 1,878-unit War Office order in May 1949 pushed Rover to standardize on a proper Bronze Green.
Solihull in 1948 was building a tractor substitute to keep the export ledger positive. Whether it might also become a household name wasn't a question anyone there was asking. By 1992, Land Rover itself claimed 70 percent of every unit it had ever built was still on the road, a strange kind of vindication for something conceived as a stopgap.
